Apple TV+ series Truth Be Told has Octavia Spencer leading an impressive cast, playing a true-crime podcaster.
Truth Be Told is one of several high-profile peak television projects set for Apple TV+, the tech giant’s streaming content platform, which launches in November with offerings like the Jason Momoa sci-fi thriller series, See, and will subsequently debut the M. Night Shyamalan-developed mystery series, Servant, with myriad more on its developmental docket.
Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer headlines this 10-episode prestige crime drama, joined in the cast by names like Aaron Paul and Lizzy Caplan. Spencer plays Poppy Parnell, a famous true-crime podcaster who is starting to suspect that the subject of her claim-to-fame breaking case (Paul) might have been wrongly incarcerated, leaving her with serious questions about the justice system, and, notably, her own judgment.
Nichelle Tramble Spellman (The Good Wife, Justified) serves as showrunner and executive producer for Truth Be Told. The show is a production of Hello Sunshine, the company of Reese Witherspoon, who also serves as an EP, joined by partner Lauren Neustadter. Truth Be Told Details
As the official synopsis for Truth Be Told reads:
Every truth has a consequence. When new evidence compels podcaster Poppy Parnell (Octavia Spencer) to reopen the murder case that made her a national sensation, she comes face to face with Warren Cave (Aaron Paul), the man she may have mistakenly helped to put behind bars. Her investigation navigates urgent concerns about privacy, media and race.
Truth Be Told is an adaptation of Are You Sleeping, the 2017 true-crime novel by author Kathleen Barber. The story of the book follows the life of Josie, a woman that has tried to move on from her father’s murder 13 years prior, but who is forced back into the limelight when a Serial-esque true crime podcast about the crime calls into question the guilt of the boy convicted of the crime. While reviews of the book were underwhelmed by the mystery itself, most found the novel’s interrogation of our country’s obsession with true crime and true crime podcasts valuable.
Octavia Spencer, the 2012 Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner for The Help – also known for Oscar-nominated performances in Hidden Figures and The Shape of Water – is coming off a career turn as a slasher movie assailant in this past May’s horror film, Ma. She will soon be seen as part of the cast of Netflix’s 2020-scheduled TV series, Madam C.J. Walker.
Co-star Aaron Paul just fielded a Breaking Bad role reprisal as Jesse Pinkman in sequel movie El Camino. Lizzy Caplan will take a baton from Kathy Bates when she plays Misery character Annie Wilkes in the second season of Hulu’s Stephen King adaptation series, Castle Rock.
The primary trio are joined by names such as Ron Cephas Jones, Elizabeth Perkins, Mekhi Phifer, Michael Beach, Tracie Thoms and Haneefah Wood.
