The latest Pokemon Sword and Shield trailer showcases what may be some UK-inspired new Pokemon.
A new Pokémon Sword and Shield trailer has arrived, revealing new forms for familiar Pokémon and a fresh evil team for players to face in the upcoming Nintendo Switch title. The game is set in the Galar region, which is inspired by the UK, and it’s easy to see that influence in these new reveals.
Just like the Alola region before it, the Galar region will boast bespoke versions of pre-established critters, with the Galarian form of Weezing crossing the Generation 1 poison-type creature with a big grey power plant like Battersea Power Station.
There are also Galarian versions of Zigzagoon, Linoone, and Obstagoon, with this chain of raccoon Pokémon being redesigned to look like more like a British badger. You can see all those pocket monsters and more in the trailer below…
This trailer even features a brand new Pokémon called Morpeko which has a ‘form switching’ ability that allows it to look cute and harmless in its “full belly mode” and absolutely evil in its “hangry mode.” It’s unclear if this, too, is meant to be a nod to British culture.
We also got our first look at Team Yell, a punk-inspired team that will follow in the footsteps of previous evil cabals such as Team Rocket. Team Yell’s members are described as ‘Marnie’s Wild Fans’, with Marnie being one of the game’s rival characters.
As well as the punky Marnie, another rival character was revealed. This one is called Bede, and they have curly grey hair and a natty purple jacket. Is it just us, or is this character meant to look a bit like her royal highness Queen Elizabeth II?
All will be revealed when Pokémon Sword and Shield release on Nintendo Switch on 15 November. And if you just can’t wait until then for some critter-catching action, check out our list of free Pokémon games that you could be playing in the meantime.
